BRUSSELS – Authorities in Belgium said elderly person No. 27 died in the outbreak at a nursing home from a Saint Nick party that went viral last month, but they hope the situation is now under control.
Hemelrijck’s home in Mol, northern Belgium, organized a visit on December 4 by a troupe playing the lovable saint who usually spreads fun and gifts. But the city and families of some of the dead complained that the nursing home should never have held a party when there were restrictions on events across the country to contain the pandemic.
“The event was not coordinated with the Crisis Cell,” Mol said, and if they had heard about it in advance, they would have stopped it.
The municipality said on New Year’s Eve that Person No. 27 had died.
At the Hemilrejk nursing home, no one was available for comment on Friday. At the last count, the home had 88 infections among residents and 42 among employees.
Lily Linarts, whose 85-year-old sister Angel was the first to die after the outbreak, is upset about the way nursing homes treat family members.
She said, “I still haven’t received a condolence card (from the nursing home) and I’ve been visiting it for four years.” latest news.
Saint Nicholas is the traditional December 6 gift giving day and is more important to children in Belgium than Santa Claus on December 25, and is basically a family gathering.
Initially, a Saint Nick’s group actor was thought to be the source of the outbreak, but later research cannot be completely conclusive.
Belgium’s eminent virologist, Marc Van Ranst, said it “cannot be said with 100 percent certainty that he introduced it in a care home”. “The man was a volunteer in the care home, and in theory he could be infected by a resident or an employee,” he added.
The city said the outbreak had finally stabilized.
“The health status of the population has shown a remarkable improvement,” the city said in a statement.
Belgium, a country of 11.5 million people, has been hit hard by the pandemic with 19,528 confirmed virus deaths so far, many of them in nursing homes.
